The High Peaks Bluegrass Band was formed in the autumn of 2016. Since that time, founding members Steve Butler, Tom Behan, and Jeff Anderson have worked to create a collection of tightly arranged works in classic bluegrass, newgrass, and folk revival genres. Known for their close-knit harmonies and loyalty to the origins of bluegrass music, High Peaks Bluegrass Band has developed a strong following throughout the North Country, from the Catskills to the far northern reaches of the Adirondacks.
Tom Behan is a truetone bluegrass vocalist and is considered by many to be one of the top guitar flat pickers in the North Country. Tom has played music in the Capitol district and beyond since the 1980s, including a lengthy stint with the Boot Hill Band.
Jeff Anderson plays mandolin and adds lead and high tenor harmony vocals that are crucial to the band’s classic “high lonesome” sound.
Steve Butler began playing bass in the fifth grade. As a singer, his “trumpet voice”, developed through decades as a minister, is powerful and iconic.
The band is excited to add Mac Petrequin to the lineup. Mac has a long and illustrious career in the North Country bluegrass scene. He began playing banjo in 1976. A few years later he took up rhythm guitar, followed by bass. Mac picked up the dobro in 1997. Through the years, Mac has played with Dyer Switch, Burnt Hills Bluegrass, Just Passin Through, and Bear Tracks. He formed the award-winning band “Out Of The Bluegrass”. Mac plays banjo and dobro, and sings lead and backing vocals for High Peaks.
The High Peaks Bluegrass Band has performed at numerous bluegrass festivals, the Adirondack Balloon Festival, performance venues such as Caffe Lena and The Parting Glass, community concerts. They also enjoy bringing their music to many senior living centers in the area.
